Michigan students help at center

by Melissa Castillo

Cleveland-Twelve students from Central Michigan University spent part of their winter break volunteering at the Cleveland LGBT Center as part of the school's "Alternative Breaks" program.

The students arrived December 14 to spend a week working with center staff and volunteers on various projects including mailings, cleaning, painting and a "Make the Center Sparkle" project on December 17.

The university's Alternative Breaks are part of a nationwide college volunteer organization called the Breakaway Program. Many colleges and universities participate, as Central Michigan has for the past ten years.

Students sign up voluntarily for various sites, chosen by the program's executive board with a focus on organizations that work for social justice. Looking for an experience with LGBT diversity, two adult "site leaders" accompanied the students.

This is the first Alternative Break experience for some of the students volunteering at the center. Other have participated for several years. Students and site leaders stayed at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Tremont.

Melissa Castillo is the volunteer coordinator for the Cleveland LGBT Center.
